Is Soldier's Dancer this year's Barbaro

A $4,000 purchase, the gelding Soldier's Dancer (Lost Soldier x Heather's Dancer (Gate Dancer)), won today's 100,000 Tropical Park Derby (gr. IIIT)at Calder. The same race won by last year's Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro.

Soldier’s Dancer, ridden by Cornelio Velasquez, came running late in the 1 1/8 miles turf race, closing fast to defeat Sedgefield. It was another 1¾ lengths back to Storm in May who was the early pacesetter. Soldier’s Dancer completed the nine furlongs in 1:48.95.

His next start will be likely be the Holy Bull, on February 3 at Gulfstream. The same race Barbaro used for his dirt debut. Soldier's Dancer has run on the dirt before with some success.

He is expected to meet TCT's Number 4 horse Nobiz Like Shobiz, giving us the first riding dilemma of the year, when Cornelio Velasquez will have to choose between the two. Expect him to go with Nobiz, and for another top rider to pick up the mount on Soldier's Dancer.

Expect Soldier's Dancer to jump from nowhere to a possible Top 10 position on our next poll, coming out in 2 weeks.
